Fixed Smoke Detectors are the most common used detection device.
Usually fitted to protect escape routes from a building should they become blocked by smoke and fire, giving an early indication that fire is present and allowing everyone to escape safely before it's too late.
In areas where people sleep such as Hotels or other accommodation Smoke Detectors are also used to give fast warning that fire and smoke is present.

Fixed Heat Detectors are also used as a form of fire detection. Most commonly used in areas where steam or smoke is expected and may cause false alarms. These areas tend to be kitchens and areas where high dust or dirty air is created by a process within the work place. Heat Detectors should be avoided in escape routes and where people sleep.

As technology has progressed we now have the ability to add a further device to a Fire Alarm System. Carbon Monoxide sensors are now available and are an added benefit to areas that could be affected by smouldering fires, giving off high levels of Carbon Monoxide before an actual blaze occurs. These types of detectors should be used in conjunction with a fire alarm when there is a risk to sleepers such as bedrooms.

These Red Call Points are what everyone associates to fire alarms. Mostly seen adjacent to exit doors, fire exits and on stairways they're an instant way of activating the Fire Alarm manually should you detect a threat. Pressing the device will instantly activate the bells or sounders giving everyone clear indication to evacuate the building safely.

When the fire alarm is activated it is very important that everyone can be notified of the alarm and have enough time to safely evacuate the building. To achieve this all alarm systems are fitted sounders to meet the db (decibel) levels required under British Standard BS 5839 pt 1. These sounders will continue to give high level audible notification that the alarm has activated, and should never be silenced until all is clear and the cause of the activation has been identified. To ensure we protect all within our buildings most Fire Alarm sounders or bells are now fitted with Flashing Red Lights. This will ensure the hard of hearing or people in areas where the background sound levels are high can still be fully aware that the property must be evacuated.
